Resource: What They Think?

PBM Graphics, Inc., a Consolidated Graphics, Inc. (NYSE: CGX) company, and a leading commercial print and fulfillment services provider in the United States, is pleased to announce it has completed the installation of a new Mark Andy Performance Series P7 flexographic press to serve the packaging and labeling needs of customers with the most advanced production technology. PBM Graphics’ flexo press is the first Mark Andy P7 to be custom-engineered outside of standard press specifications with a larger 30” pattern repeat, and is the only unit with Electron Beam (EB) adhesive curing technology on a flexo footprint.

“The installation of the Mark Andy P7 rounds out PBM Graphics’ in-house capabilities with the latest flexo technology available, eliminating outsourcing and providing our customers with turnkey service, shortened cycle time, and enhanced quality levels on specialized packaging,” said Adam Geerts, President of PBM Graphics.

Flexo press technology is typically used for printing high-quality labels and packaging. The Mark Andy P7 at PBM Graphics delivers superior productivity and efficiency and is designed to handle very thin film substrates, helping to expand capabilities to include overwraps on collectible trading cards using fin seals, specialized packaging applications, prime labels and unsupported films for bottle wraps. The unique 30” pattern repeat allows for larger formats and multiple images.

The unique EB curing technology provides clarity in plastic-to-plastic lamination and scuff resistance to labels, and the press modification permits graphical effects with foil, all improving the aesthetic effects and appeal.

The newly installed flexo press offers several advantages over traditional presses, including minimal ink usage and reduced waste to support environmental considerations, while the fast make-ready times enhance productivity rates, especially for very large projects.

“This new press allows us to better serve our customers by utilizing new capabilities and services that go beyond folded cartons and bottle wraps,” stated Geerts. “It also allows us to expand our reach further into the beverage and health and beauty industries as well.” PBM Graphics currently serves customers in publishing, retail, healthcare and entertainment segments, and is the largest manufacturer of paper trading cards in the U.S.

This year’s emerge conference in Dallas, Texas was a rousing success, enabling CGX customers, business executives, print leaders, and equipment and technology developers to come together to share the latest marketing and technology innovations that are positioning companies for success.

From personalized conference materials to grand format floor coverings, the Hyatt Regency in downtown Dallas was transformed with the presence of emerge. With nearly 1,000 attendees, this year’s conference was full of highlights, including:

Keynote speakers Eileen Gittins (Founder and CEO, Blurb), John Sabel (Executive Vice President, Motion Picture Creative Print Marketing, Walt Disney Studios), Jamey Rootes (President, Houston Texans), and Don Pettit (Chairman and CEO, Mally Beauty),

The announcement of CGX’s new cloud computing data center and WorkSmart Suite™ collection of marketing solutions,

The announcement of the 1st Annual Encore™Award winners,

49 educational breakout sessions for attendees to learn and exchange ideas,

The business expo, which gave attendees the opportunity to see the excellent work being done by CGX companies, suppliers and customers, and

A live demonstration of Adobe’s Creative Suite 5.5.

And who could forget the party at Cowboys Stadium for all attendees? Conference guests had the opportunity to see this world-renowned stadium up close and take part in a wide selection of football games to show off their athletic ability on the same field as professional NFL players.

All of the keynote speakers gave attendees great advice and takeaways from their speeches. For example, Eileen Gittins stated that “taking something to print means that it matters,” and Jamey Rootes told the audience “you should push yourself to the limits, and if you’re not then you aren’t doing your job to the best of your ability.” Each speaker gave his or her own perspective about what it takes to be successful in business.

In this Proofing Update, the wish list and the research and development that went into the design process for the Hewlett-Packard Z2100 proof printer is profiled.

PBM Color Expert, Wayne Bailey, traveled to HP’s location in Barcelona, Spain a number of years ago to be part of a user group that met with hardware and software engineers who had the purpose of identifying the features most wanted in a proofing device. Since that trip, a collaboration of the users and engineers have put together the attributes that are found in the newest large-format proofing device on the PBM prep department floor – the HP Z2100 with GMG ColorProof software.

Throughout PBM’s 24 year history, our approach has been to adapt, modify and grow our business by providing complete and customized solutions while continually updating our technology for our customers.
